  17. JIV is a picture viewer. I can imagine that you're wondering
  18. now why I had to write yet another one... well, here's a list
  19. of features that should answer your question:
  20.  
  21.  · JIV supports many different file formats:
  22.  
  23.    - GIF (full GIF87a standard plus a subset of GIF89a).
  24.  
  25.    - BMP (MS-Windows and OS/2 variants, currently only
  26.      uncompressed).
  27.  
  28.    - IFF-ILBM (including HAM6, HAM8, EHB and 24bit formats).
  29.  
  30.    - PNM pictures (PBM, PGM and PPM in both binary and
  31.      ASCII format).
  32.  
  33.    - PCX (8bit/VGA, 24 bit, monochrome and _some_ 4 bit)
  34.  
  35.    - JPEG/JFIF, if the JPEG CODEC is installed.
  36.  
  37.    - a reasonable subset of the TIFF 6.0 standard,
  38.      including 1, 8 and 24 bit pictures in the
  39.      compression types 1, 5 and 32773.
  40.      JIV does not support the so-called "NeXT TIFF"
  41.      format yet, but I'm working on the problems
  42.      involved. Patience, please. :)

  44.  · JIV supports several types of display hardware:
  45.  
  46.    - all native graphics chipsets (OCS, ECS and AGA).
  47.  
  48.    - Cybergraphics emulation.
  49.  
  50.    - A2024.
  51.  
  52.    - Picasso-II/Village emulation.
  53.  
  54.    - Generic mode, should work with every graphics board that
  55.      emulates Workbench/Intuition. Tested with the Picasso-II
  56.      emulation and the Cybergraphics emulation.
  57.  
  58.  · JIV supports displaying over-sized images using autoscroll.
  59.  
  60.  · JIV supports multiple filenames and AmigaDOS pattern
  61.    matching.
  62.  
  63.  · JIV can dither pictures that use more colors than your
  64.    display hardware supports.
  65.  
  66.  · JIV offers an endless/slideshow mode that can be used for
  67.    (non-interactive) advertising, for example in a shop window.

  69. Please note that JIV is probably not the best choice for
  70. "small" Amiga configurations. It will need a lot of memory and
  71. (in some cases) quite a bit of computing power as well.
  72.  
  73. The minimum configuration for JIV is:
  74.  
  75.  · 68000 or better.
  76.  
  77.  · AmigaOS 2.04 (V37) or better.
  78.  
  79.  · 1 MByte or more of RAM.
  80.  
  81. This configuration should allow you to view small to medium-sized
  82. pictures (640x480x8 should just be possible).
  83.  
  84. The suggested configuration for JIV is:
  85.  
  86.  · 68030 or better.
  87.  
  88.  · AmigaOS 3.1 (V40) or better.
  89.  
  90.  · 4 MBytes of RAM or more.
  91.  
  92.  · Hard disk drive.
  93.  
  94. This configuration will allow you to view most pictures you're
  95. likely to find. A bit more RAM wouldn't hurt, though. :-) And
  96. of course you'll need a graphics board if you want to display
  97. true-color pictures without dithering.

  101. Distribution License
  102.  
  103. This version of JIV may be distributed freely for
  104. non-commercial purposes only. You must distribute the entire
  105. archive INTACT and UNCHANGED, that is, you are NOT allowed
  106. to add files to the archive or remove files from the archive
  107. or change files in the archive.
  108.  
  109. Specifically, you're allowed to:
  110.  
  111.  · Distribute JIV on floppy-disk-based collections of
  112.    PD software.
  113.  
  114.  · Distribute JIV on CDROM-based collections of PD software IN
  115.    ARCHIVED FORM ONLY, unless you obtain a specific license
  116.    from the author.

  118.  · Distribute JIV electronically, for example through email or
  119.    FTP, or through BBS systems.

  121.    BBS sysops, do NOT add those pesky BBS advertisments to the
  122.    archive!

  124. Specifically, you're NOT allowed to:

  126.  · Distribute parts of the archive or changed/patched versions
  127.    of the files in this archive.

  129.  · Distribute JIV on CDROM in ready-to-run form, unless you
  130.    obtain a specific license from the author first.

  132.  · Distribute JIV in any form on CDROMs that contain
  133.    picture collections, unless you obtain a specific license
  134.    from the author first.¹

  136.  · Distribute JIV bundled together with a commercial product
  137.    (software, hardware or other), unless you obtain a specific
  138.    license from the author first.

  140. I have been informed that in the U.S. a patent has been
  141. granted for the LZW compression algorithm used in the GIF
  142. file format, and that the patent holder requires a license
  143. fee for use of this algorithm in commercial software
  144. (including shareware). Therefore I will not ask for any
  145. shareware fees from U.S. users of JIV.

  148. Please do not confuse this distribution license, which details
  149. the terms and conditions for DISTRIBUTING JIV, with the
  150. shareware license which details the terms and conditions for
  151. USING JIV.

  153. ¹ Permission is granted to include ARCHIVED versions of JIV on
  154.   the following CDROMs even if these CDROMs contain picture
  155.   collections:

  188. Known problems:
  189.  
  190.  · If you're using an A4000/040 kickstart file on a computer
  191.    with a CPU <= 68020, the DISPLAY=GENERIC may crash your
  192.    machine. This is not a bug in JIV. The BestModeIDA() system
  193.    call in the A4000 kickfile seems to contain an instruction
  194.    that is only available on 68030 and above.

  196.    As far as I can tell, there are only two kinds of people
  197.    who use A4000 kickstart files on CPUs below 68030: former
  198.    registered developers and software pirates.
